[The response isn't immediate, but after the last one, he knows what to expect. Goes through the first word with old Vigenère keys until something works. He's not surprised when it does, just angry.]

[It's the admission Ford's been waiting for, but there's nothing satisfying about it -- just the same low-boiling anger and sense of helplessness at not knowing where to start or what to stop. He's done with this, wasted enough time on codes and games that bring him nowhere closer to what he needs to know. When he finally moves to switch the communicator output he's embarrassed to realize his hand is shaking with the same barely-suppressed resentment that laces every word.]
I'll die before I do a thing to make this easier for you, Bill. This stops here.
I need help testing the scanner. I'm getting close, but I don't how how it will work with someone who's not physiologically human. If it interferes, I need to know. It might not be relevant, but the risk is there.
I'd prefer to keep the prototype here. Bill's been quiet, but I have no way to know when he's watching. Or where. The less he knows about anything I'm doing, the better. As for when... things aren't urgent yet, but there's no telling when that will change. I'd rather have this done sooner than later.
In that case, I'll pop on over to deliver a present or something and oh, what a coincidence, you've got a scanner here that I can help test, I surely wasn't planning this at all.
[Grunkle Ford hasn't been in this dimension for 30 years, so it's hard to say whether or not he even remembers that Valentine's Day is a thing. Despite that, Mabel still makes a card for him, writes a note after minutes of agonizing over what to say. She quietly tapes it to his door early in the morning so that he'll see it eventually.
Happy Valentine's Day, Grunkle Ford! I'm really glad you're back with us.]
[Okay, so she barely knows you, but she'd feel guilty if all the other Pines got something and you didn't - plus, you seem nice, so here's a card she drew herself! You also get chocolate. Happy Valentine's Day!]
If one doesn't work, try the other. He's still looking for a way out. Eventually he's going to get tired and turn to someone else. [There's something off about the way Ford says it, like he can't decide whether to be hopeful or nervous.] By then, hopefully, we'll be ready.
